Alexandre Song signs a new long-term contract

Arsenal Football Club announces that Alex Song has signed a new long-term contract with the Club.

Song, 20, originally joined Arsenal on a season-long loan from French side Bastia in 2005, before signing permanently in July 2006. He impressed greatly during a loan spell with Charlton Athletic in the 2006/07 season, before returning to the Club last season.

Alex, who has made six appearances for Cameroon, featured 15 times for the first team last season. Although a strong holding midfielder, Song can also operate in defence, and played at centre-back for the last five matches of the 2007/08 season.

It is believed that Wenger sees the 20-year-old’s long-term future as a defender and, speaking recently, the Frenchman made clear his belief that Song will become a key player in the coming years.

"I believe he is a remarkable player and I was one of the very, very few who believed in Alexandre Song," said Wenger.

"I can show you articles in newspapers which said that [he] was the worst buy I have made but you will see in one or two years that he will be a great player for Arsenal."
