Wenger gunning for early goal

Arsene Wenger has admitted there is ‘more urgency’ required from his Arsenal side when they meet Liverpool in the second leg of the sides’ Champions League quarter final at Anfield on Tuesday, and the Frenchman says he will prime his side to go for an early goal.

The Gunners boss also said he still has an unshakable belief his side will finish the season as Premier League champions, and that aspersions which have been cast over Cesc Fabregas’ ability to finish the season strongly are wide of the mark.

Speaking before his side’s clash at Anfield, Wenger revealed Emmanuel Adebayor would play some part in the encounter and also talked about his gameplan.

"I believe it will be a little bit different [this time] because at the end of the game it will be a sanctioned one, and we want to stay in this competition," said Wenger. "It is a bit more urgent in this game, and less observational.

"We have belief we can win anywhere in the world and we’ll try to play the game so it doesn’t go to penalties, we’ll play the game to win it.

"If you ask me what is my wish it’s not necessarily to be patient, it’s to score early goals, as many as we can. If we need to be patient, we will be, but the game will dictate that."

Wenger also said he had total belief that Fabregas has enough energy to play a strong role in helping the side to victory, but chose to focus on his team as a whole rather than just one player.

"I believe more that the success of a game is based on the whole team playing as a unit rather than one individual," Wenger said. "You don’t want to put the pressure on just one person.

"This team has been built to play a highly collective game. We know we need to play collectively very well, and then all our individual players come out very strong.

"I still think Cesc has enough in the tank, even if he has played many games."

Wenger added: "I brought Adebayor, and he will play tomorrow. He doesn’t know yet, but I just announced it!"

After title rivals Manchester United drew with Middlesbrough on Sunday, Wenger also said he still thinks his side can end the domestic season triumphantly even if they do lie six points behind the league leaders.

"I personally still believe we will finish champions in this league," he added. "The result yesterday helped a lot because if Manchester United won yesterday I would believe today no.

"But I still believe we will do it, and that’s why the result yesterday is a boost."
