Xabi Alonso has downplayed talk of Liverpool being favourites to progress from their Champions League quarter final encounter with Arsenal, the second leg of which takes place on Tuesday.
"I don't think we are favourites. The tie is quite balanced and we feel confident but I would not say we are clear favourites," said Alonso.
"It is the most important game of the season of course because it is probably the biggest chance for us to get some silverware and to lift a trophy and we are solely focusing on that.
"I think that we feel confident in this competition. Over the last few years we have been quite successful and hopefully this year that will happen the same and this year we want to do that again."
Despite having a distinct chance of overcoming their Premier League rivals Alonso says that the club’s domestic form needs to mirror their European pedigree if they are to enjoy true success in the near future.
He added: "In The Premier League we need to be more consistent but we know that in The Champions League over two legs we can beat anyone and take on big clubs and tomorrow we are facing another one.
