With the tie delicately poised and the illustrious history surrounding European nights at Anfield, many believe the Merseysiders now hold the whip-hand. Adebayor disagrees.
“Why can't we do it?” queried the striker. “People said we could never win in Milan, but we did it. We will just keep on doing what we do, keep our focus and we are sure we can do something there.
“We had a lot of chances, but it was a difficult game. We had a great team in front of us in Liverpool. We have drawn and we know it is going to be very tough up at Anfield. They defend very well and have a good squad.
“We have to keep our confidence high and do what we have to do. We know that we have a quality and the mental strength to come back and win at Anfield.
“A lot of people wrote us off, but we have to show people that they are wrong. I think we have done that well against Milan, now it is another challenge at Liverpool. We just have to believe in ourselves and play our football. If we play our football, pass and movement, going in behind, then we get a lot of chances.”
Defeat at Anfield, coupled with failure to upset the odds in the Premier League title race, would bring a sorry end to a season that had promised so much. It is not a premise that Adebayor so much as entertains.
“At the beginning of the season, a lot of people had written us off,” he continued. “This season, with what we have shown, it would be very good if we could win something, and a shame if we could not.
“There is still one month to go, we have a quality squad and we are going to put our hearts into the game. Hopefully we can win.”
